Chapter 15: My Sister's Hands

At six on Friday morning I was in Ethan's kitchen, in his grey shirt, and the surgeon in Greenwich was waiting for me.

I had told Ethan everything in the car.

He had told me what Richard said, and we had sat in the drive for twenty minutes with the engine off.

I had not cried.

I had said, "Nobody makes this choice for me. Not her. Not you."

And Ethan had said, "I'd never try."

He was asleep upstairs now, with one arm out across my side of the bed.

I was drinking tea I did not want when a taxi turned in at the top of the lane.

I watched it come down through the grey light.

A girl got out of the back with her hair loose and a man's raincoat over her nightdress.

She stood in the drive and did not seem to know which way to go.

She had my face, thinner and paler, and she looked cold to the bone.

I opened the door before she could knock.

"Sylvie."

"I'm sorry," she said. "I couldn't use the front gate. My mother would have heard. I took the taxi from the end of the drive."

"You're shaking."

"I'm always shaking. It's all right." She tried to smile. "May I come in?"

I put her at the kitchen table and wrapped the raincoat round her, and I made her tea with sugar in it.

She held the cup in both hands, and I saw the scar on her forearm, and the fine blue bruises where a needle had gone in.

"I'm going to say it fast," she said, "because if I say it slowly I'll stop."

"All right."

"I knew from the first night. Mother brought you into the library, and the family doctor took your blood, and I was on the stairs. I heard her say to him, 'It has to be her. Nobody else.' And I knew what she meant. I've had that test myself, years ago. I know what the number means."
