Chapter 18: The Toast
The rehearsal dinner was set for thirty in the long dining room at the Westport house.
Ethan's father sat at the head of the table with Diane on his right, and neither of them looked at us as we came in.
Richard sat halfway down with a glass of water.
The family doctor was there, and a judge's wife, and a cousin of Ethan's mother, and a woman from the foundation who had a notebook.
Sylvie sat beside Gilbert.
She wore a high-necked grey dress, and her face was very small and white.
Ethan and I took the two chairs at the far end of the table.
He had a laptop under his arm and the dashcam card in his pocket.
I had my phone, and a plan.
"Are you sure?" he said, very low.
"It's your life."
"It's our life."
"Then we're sure."
The first course came, and was cleared.
Gilbert rose at the second.
He tapped his glass with a fork, and everybody turned, and he smiled the easy smile that had carried him through thirty-four years.
I saw how much he had drunk before I saw his eyes.
"Friends," he said. "Family. And my future sister-in-law the baker, who is, I'm told, famous this morning."
A ripple of laughter.
"I'd like to say a few words about my brother. My little brother Ethan." Gilbert put his hand on his heart. "Who has been through such a lot."
Ethan did not move.
"Two years ago he had an accident. A terrible, tragic accident. We nearly lost him, and he's carried it all this time, with such courage, and such a lovely cane."
