Chapter 19: What She Gave Up

The Bureau held its hearing in the town hall, because the basement couldn't hold the crowd.

Every folding chair was taken by nine in the morning, and the rest of Harlow Point stood along the walls.

Three people sat at the long table on the stage: the supervisor, a county commissioner in a brown suit, and a retired judge who had signed half the town's deeds.

Deborah sat alone at a smaller table in front, in gray, with her hands folded.

Nobody from the auxiliary sat near her.

Two of the women had already sent in their resignations, and everyone in the room knew it.

"Mrs. Fairclough," the commissioner said. "You may speak."

She stood.

"I've been told I'm cruel," she said. Her voice was low and clear. "I'd like to tell you what I did, so you can decide."

The hall went quiet.

"My daughter was taken from my arms at twenty to five in the morning. A woman handed me a baby in a blanket. That baby cried, and I held her, and she stopped."

Deborah looked at her hands.

"I could not hold two losses," she said. "I picked the one who was in front of me. I told myself I'd undo it. I told myself for twenty years."

"But you didn't undo it," said the judge.

"No."

"You spent the hundred days making sure."

"Yes."

Somebody on the left side of the hall hissed.
