Chapter 5: The Charity Lunch

The Harbor Auxiliary held its lunch in the grange hall, and my mother ran it from a podium with a bell.

There were forty round tables and a banner over the stage: A HUNDRED DAYS FOR CORA.

By the door stood a glass jar the size of a barrel, and it was already half full of cash.

Cora sat at the front table in a yellow dress, with 92 floating over her head and a ribbon pinned to her collar.

I sat beside her, because the wish said so.

"Neighbors," my mother said into the microphone. "Friends. Every dollar today goes to granting Cora's wishes before her time here ends."

The hall applauded.

A woman at the next table dabbed her eyes with a napkin. "That poor girl. And she's so brave."

I looked at the number over my sister's head.

I looked at the empty air above my own.

Nobody could see mine. That had been true since the van, and I was beginning to understand what it cost me.

When the applause died, I stood up.

I hadn't planned the words. I had the Bureau's copy of my sheet in my pocket, and I took it out and held it where the first three tables could see.

"I'm Seren," I said. "Cora's sister. I came home last week."

The hall went quiet in a polite way.

"I have a failing heart. The clinic gave me about a hundred days, the same hundred she has." I turned the paper so they could read the Bureau seal. "I'd like to ask whether any of this fund could go to a doctor for me."
