Chapter 13: What's Mine
By morning Cadoc wanted to burn the Regency cells to the ground.
He walked up and down the round room with the broken table in two halves behind him and said so, twice.
"And then what?" I said. "Sioned goes to the Moot as the cook who started a war."
"Then I'll go to the Moot as a man who burned a wall."
"Sioned told me to fight in public. So we will."
He stopped pacing.
"I need to go to the cottage," I said.
"Which cottage?"
"My parents'. Fourth from the end. My mother never kept the cup in the kitchen, and I don't believe she buried it in the field." I took a breath. "And I need three days where I'm not holding your wrist."
His face did not change, but I saw something go out of his shoulders.
"The leash," he said.
"Thirty paces. I know."
"The Row is a quarter mile."
"Then you stay thirty paces away," I said, "and you don't knock."
He looked at me for a long time.
"I'll stand where you tell me," said Cadoc.
The cottage was fourth from the end, with a slate roof and a green door.
Its chimney had never once failed to smoke.
