Chapter 10: The Luna's Reason

Sorcha drank the tea I put in front of her with both hands, and her hands would not stop shaking.

We sat in the Blood Moon kitchen, the three of us, with Garth guarding the door and pretending to polish a spoon.

"Tell me," I said.

"I knew," said Sorcha.

The mug rattled against her teeth.

"I knew about the letter, Hazel. I've known for five years."

I had expected it, and it still hurt.

"How?"

"Brendan told me the week after your birthday. He was proud of himself." Her mouth twisted. "He said your father had come to him in the night with a plan, and it was the neatest thing in the world."

"What plan?"

"You know the Silver River pass. It's the only winter road between our valley and the mountains."

"Everyone knows the pass."

"Do you know the clause?"

"Our treaty says that if a Silver Dawn wolf is ever bonded to a Blood Moon Alpha, control of the pass moves to Blood Moon."

"Our grandfathers wrote it after the border war."

I looked at Ronan.

He shook his head slowly, as stunned as I was.

"I never knew that," he said. "My father never mentioned it."

"Your father never expected a bond," said Sorcha.

"Then you turned up at our gate, Ronan, and Hazel was your mate."

"Brendan saw the whole valley's winter road walk across the river on her arm."

"So he wanted her gone."

"He wanted the bond cut before it could become a claim."

"Chester wanted it cut for other reasons."

"Together they forged the page, and Chester took it to the border himself."
