Chapter 18: What Chester Gave Up

The Council of Alphas met on the Silver Dawn bank of the river, at a long table of unplaned boards that Garth had carried down himself.

Five Alphas sat behind it in their traveling coats.

Not one of them had been to Silver Dawn in twenty years, and none of them wanted to be here now.

Behind them stood both packs, divided by the water, with the ford between them as it had been the day I crossed.

I stood on the Blood Moon side with Ronan's hand around mine.

My new mark itched under the collar of my dress, and I kept my face straight.

Brendan stood at the Silver Dawn end of the bank with his signet ring on his finger and a polite, injured look on his face.

Sorcha, beside me, did not look at him once.

"The Council hears Chester Bramley," said the eldest Alpha, a gaunt woman with iron hair. "He asked to speak first. We will allow it, though it is irregular."

My father walked out into the open ground in front of the table.

He had taken the badge off his coat.

He held it in both hands, as he would have held something hot.

"The ford has heard what I did to my daughter," he said. "The Council has not heard why, or what I did after."

The bank went silent.

Every wolf of Silver Dawn was watching its beta stand in the open air with nothing on his coat.

"I did it because I believed a mating bond had killed a friend of mine, thirty-two years before," he said. "I was wrong about that. The Blood Moon steward has told the Council what really killed her."

"We have heard it," said the gaunt woman. "Go on."

"I put the letter in the Alpha of Blood Moon's hand at his own border, and I let him stand there three days. I watched him from the trees on the second night."
