Chapter 11: My Wife

Nobody in the back room said a word.

Then everyone said something at once.

"Wife?" Daphne said. "What wife?"

"You said you were divorced," Brynn said, very loud, from the middle of the room.

Trent held up one hand, still smiling.

For the first time I understood how much of that smile was something he switched on.

"Brynn, hold on."

"You told me you were divorced. You told me last spring. You told me she was crazy and gone."

"I said it was complicated."

"You said divorced!"

"She's been following me for months," Trent said to the room, in a voice meant to carry. "I didn't want to bring it up at a party. Hallie isn't well. She finds out where I am and turns up with men to embarrass me. That's what this is."

Fifteen people looked at Hallie.

She didn't defend herself.

She stood very straight with her hand still resting on my sleeve.

"Everything he's said in the last minute is a lie except the word wife," she said quietly.

I took my arm out from under her fingers.

She felt it. Her hand hung there for a second in the air and then dropped to her side.

"Is it true?" I asked.

My voice sounded polite and far away.

"Yes."

"He's your husband."

"Yes. Three years."

"You knew who he was on the flume."

She closed her eyes. "Yes."

"You knew at Pearl's. You knew when Brynn said his name in the hall, and when you asked me what he did for work."

"Miles."
