Chapter 21: Removing a Driver

Miles's POV

I heard Brynn's voice from the kitchen and was in the hall before I knew I'd stood up.

Hallie held the front door half open.

She hadn't let Brynn in, and she hadn't shut it either.

"Hi, Miles," Brynn said.

Her smile was bright and her eyes were not.

"This is my new landlord. He owns the building on Fairlane where I've found a place. He needs a co-signer, and a deposit, and I told him you'd be glad to help."

The man with the keys looked at me, uncomfortable.

"She said you'd agreed to it, Mr. Hendry. She said you'd cover the first and last."

"I didn't agree to anything."

"Miles," Brynn said gently. "We talked about it."

"We didn't talk about anything. You haven't called me since Tuesday."

She turned to Hallie.

"I'm sorry for the scene. You should know what you're getting into. He has sixty thousand dollars of debt. Loans, a car, a credit card he never mentions." She lowered her voice and made sure it carried. "He'll tell you he's generous, but he'll want your money by spring. He's been paying for people for two years, and it's because he can't keep anyone any other way."

I felt my mother come up behind me in the hall.

I felt Hallie not look at me.

She was waiting.

I knew exactly what she was doing. She was letting me do it myself.

"The loans are for physical therapy school," I said. "They're thirty-one thousand and some, and I've paid them every month for four years."

I took out my phone and opened the banking app and held it out to the landlord.

"That's the balance. That's the payment history. There's no car loan and no card, because the two cards were opened in my name by her."
