Chapter 22: The Witness
The police station lobby smelled of floor wax and burnt coffee.
Hallie and I sat on a bench by the glass doors.
Neither of us had said much in the car.
The detective came out at seven with a folder and a face that had been awake since morning.
"Mr. Hendry. Ms. Kirkland. Thank you for coming."
"You said he asked for her," I said.
"Mr. Sabin has been in a room for two hours. He gave a statement. In it, Ms. Aldous opened every card herself, and he was never in the loop." She shut the folder. "It's convenient."
"It's false," Hallie said.
"I know. That's why I called Ms. Aldous in."
The door opened.
Brynn came through it in her father's coat.
Her father came behind her, a thick man in a stained chef's jacket he hadn't had time to change out of.
He glanced at me and gave one short nod.
Brynn stopped in the middle of the lobby.
Her hands were in her pockets, and I could see them shaking.
"I'm ready," she said.
"Ms. Aldous," the detective said, "he's asked to see you before you speak. You don't have to."
"I know."
"Do you want to?"
Brynn looked at the glass door of the hallway, and her chin went up.
"Yes. In front of everyone, please. I'm tired of rooms with no one in them."
The detective sighed through his nose.
He walked down the hall and came back with Trent between two officers, no handcuffs, in the same charcoal suit.
His tie was off.
He looked at Brynn, and his face softened at once into something I recognized.
