Chapter 12: I Picked Your Van

"He's my father's lender," Do-hyun said.

He sat up against the pillows with the sheet around his waist and the new bruise throbbing under his ear.

Woo-jin did not move his hand from his cheek.

"Two years ago my father went out for cigarettes and didn't come back. He owed Mok three hundred and eighty million won. Mok took my ID card from his pocket, and he's been using my name ever since."

"The account in Guro."

"There are probably nine more. He keeps a drawer of other people's names." Do-hyun looked at the sheet. "The doctor's father borrowed too, I'd bet on it."

"And the seven hundred million?"

"It was Mok's skim. Your port account, a clerk he bought, my name on the transfer so that when somebody came looking, they'd find a student with no money and no lawyer."

"They found you," Woo-jin said.

"They found me." Do-hyun looked up. "The Thursday before your van, Mok's collector came to my room. He said the interest was due. He said if I couldn't pay, he knew a doctor in Incheon who'd take a kidney in part payment, no questions. He gave me until Friday week, at midnight."

Woo-jin's hand went very still.

"On Friday I went to the police, and the officer at the desk knew the collector by his first name. On Saturday I went to a lawyer, and the lawyer wanted four million up front. On Sunday I watched a black car park outside my dorm."
