Chapter 18: Ganghwa
The rice was on fire.
"It is not on fire," Woo-jin said, from the other side of the kitchen.
"There is smoke coming out of the pot."
"It is steam," Woo-jin said.
"It's black steam."
Do-hyun sat on the counter of a long wooden kitchen on Ganghwa Island at six in the evening.
He swung his feet, with a bag of strawberries on his knee.
Outside the window, the sea went from grey to violet beyond a line of black pines.
The house stood alone at the end of a gravel track, white-walled, with a tin roof and a porch full of old fishing floats.
Woo-jin had bought it at twenty-five, the week his father died, and had never once slept in it.
He stood at the stove in his shirtsleeves with a wooden spoon, scraping the bottom of a blackened pot with enormous dignity.
"I can make soup," he said.
"Can you?"
"Probably," Woo-jin said.
"You've never cooked."
"I've watched Beom-su do it. Several times."
Do-hyun put a strawberry in his mouth to keep from laughing.
It didn't work.
He laughed until he had to hold the edge of the counter.
Woo-jin turned from the stove, spoon raised, and looked at him with such helpless pleasure that the laugh died in his throat.
"What?" Do-hyun said.
"Nothing."
"You're staring."
"I'm listening," Woo-jin said, and put the spoon down.
He turned off the gas.
