Chapter 20: The Red Carpet
"I'm a doctor, not an accessory," Jun-ho said, under the flashbulbs, and took his arm out of Rae-won's.
"You're limping."
"I have two cracked ribs and a man who won't stop touching my elbow," Jun-ho said.
"I'm steadying you."
"You're steadying yourself, and I'm the railing."
Rae-won put a hand on his chest, looking wounded and delighted, in a cream tuxedo with a gold bow tie.
Do-hyun, three steps behind them on the red carpet, bit the inside of his cheek and failed not to grin.
The Gu Awards filled the hotel ballroom on the fortieth floor.
There were round tables, white roses, and three hundred guests.
Two walls of photographers had been told only that something would happen.
Woo-jin stood at his side in black.
He had said nothing in the car.
His hand rested lightly at the small of Do-hyun's back, and his fingers were very still.
"You're nervous," Do-hyun whispered.
"I am not."
"You're not breathing," Do-hyun said.
"I'm composing myself."
A stage waited at the end of the carpet, with a podium and a golden trophy shaped like a microphone.
Woo-jin had been named Executive of the Year, which he had called ridiculous and then asked what colour tie went with it.
When the host called his name, he walked up the steps.
He held the trophy in one hand and did not look at it.
The ballroom quieted.
"Thank you," he said, into the microphone. "I'll be brief."
