Chapter 11: Final Bracket

Keir pulled his shirt over his head and buttoned it wrong.

I yanked my own on, found my crutch and stood up.

"Don't," I said. "Let me."

"No." He looked at the door, and his face went flat and cold. "This is mine."

"They'll film us."

"They already are."

He opened the door.

Colson stood on the step with a camera operator and a drone hovering at his shoulder, in his blue jacket, with the smile on.

Behind him, in a ring of floodlights, a dozen crew members had stopped pretending not to watch.

"There he is," Colson said, to the lens. "And look who's with him."

I came to stand beside Keir in the doorway.

"Folks," Colson said, "a sponsored contestant, in the owner's bed, three days before the finale. Does that sound like a fair game?"

I felt Keir's hand close around the doorframe.

"Yes," Keir said.

Colson blinked. "Yes, what?"

"Yes, I'm sleeping with Susanna Wyland." Keir's voice was clear and unhurried. "She's an adult. I'm an adult. It started tonight."

Somebody in the crew said *oh my God* very quietly.

"As of this minute," Keir went on, "I'm recused from every decision about this competition. The production committee rules on anything involving her. I won't be in the control truck."

He turned his head and looked at me, just once.

"That's all I have to say."

For a moment, Colson didn't know what to do with his face.

Then he found it.

"Brantley Holdings is your title sponsor, Mr. Halverson," he said, smoothly, and for the first time, I heard a threat in it. "My father will want to discuss this in the morning."
