Chapter 18: Brett's Turn

We were at the detective's office in twenty minutes, Carrie with her shirt on inside out.

Rachel was already there with a thermos.

Brett sat at the end of the desk with a paper cup of water.

He had taken off the wire in the men's room, and the detective was wearing headphones and writing.

"She's marrying me tonight at the Grange," Brett said. "Her mother and the county clerk. Then Cabo on Friday morning. Saturday's just the show."

"The show?" I said.

"The hundred and forty people. Joanna says she wants them to see her happy, with me, three weeks after you walked out. She says nobody checks a story after a good party."

"And Cabo?"

"Cabo is the rocks." He didn't look at me. "She's got a place picked. A cliff walk with no rail. She showed me the photos on her phone, like it was a place she'd always dreamed of."

Carrie pressed her hand over her mouth.

"You heard that?" Rachel asked the detective.

"Every word," he said. He took the headphones off. "She said the rocks. She said Brett would be so sad in the pictures."

Rachel set the thermos down.

"Then arrest her," she said.

"I can't do it tonight. Utah has to sign the warrant, and a Utah judge is asleep. I'll have it by morning."

"By morning she's on a plane."

"Not if the plane isn't until Friday, and not if she thinks the plan is still moving." He turned to Brett. "Can you hold it one more day?"
