Chapter 22: In Front of Everyone
Caleb's POV
The deputy's hand fell off my shoulder the moment the recording started.
He didn't take it back.
By the time Joanna ran, he was already looking at the stage, and so was I.
She went along the wall in her ivory dress with her skirts in her fists.
She hit the side door by the kitchen at full speed.
Carrie was standing in front of it.
She had dropped the apron.
She was in her ranger jacket, which she must have worn under it, with the park patch on her shoulder.
She didn't grab Joanna.
She put one hand flat on the door and the other on her belt.
"Park's closed," Carrie said.
Joanna stopped so hard she staggered.
"Move."
"Gates shut at six, and it's past that."
"Get out of my way. You know what I'll do to you."
"I know exactly what you'll do." Carrie's voice was easy and level. "You'll wait."
Behind Joanna, boots came up the aisle.
Two men in plain dark jackets walked fast, with badges on their belts.
One of them said, "Joanna Haskell?"
She spun.
The room went very quiet.
"We're investigators from Utah County," the older one said. "You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder of Caleb Dunning. You have the right to remain silent."
"I haven't done anything. It was a wedding."
"Turn around, please."
"My dress!"
"Turn around."
She turned.
The handcuffs clicked, one and then the other, and Joanna Haskell stood in the Grange hall with her hands behind her and white flowers falling out of her hair.
