Chapter 15: Conflict

Jace went down the stairs two at a time.

At the bottom he turned around.

Then headlights swung into the lot, and his SUV pulled up with his brother at the wheel, and he got in without a word.

They drove off toward the marina.

Sawyer walked down the walkway to me.

He didn't touch me. He stood about a foot away with his hands in his pockets.

"You were magnificent," he said.

"He said Brody called your firm."

"I heard."

"Is it true?"

"I don't know yet." He looked out at the dark lot. "But Brody doesn't bluff about things he can hurt people with. He only bluffs about things he can do."

I closed my hand around the key with the pink nail polish.

"Go to sleep, Frankie," he said. "Whatever it is, it'll still be there at seven."

It was there at six-forty.

The motel breakfast room had waffles you made yourself and a television showing the weather with the sound off again.

Shay was on her second waffle. Dot had a cup of tea and a banana she wasn't eating.

Sawyer came in with his phone pressed to his ear and a face like a closed door.
