Chapter 6: Bail

I ran past the foreman and planted myself in front of the loading dock doors.

"You're not touching this building," I said.

The man in the hard hat looked down at me and then at his clipboard.

"Miss, I've got a signed order."

"My name is Dalia Aldecoa," I said. "That's my family's company. Show me where it says you can knock this down tonight."

He frowned at the paper.

"The order's in your mother's name, ma'am."

"Then it's in mine too."

A few phones turned toward us.

The reporter in the plain coat stepped up beside me and held hers high.

"Keep talking," she said quietly. "He can't touch a girl standing in front of a camera."

The excavator idled behind the foreman with its long arm lifted.

The driver leaned out of his cab, looked at me, and slowly shut the engine off.

Nobody wanted to be the man who ran over the girl on the news.

I stood there in the wind and shook.

A black sports car came around the corner too fast and stopped at an angle across the street.

Tomas jumped out.

His tie was undone and his shirt hung out on one side.

"Dalia!" he shouted. "Thank God. I went back to the room and the door was open. I thought she had hurt you."

"She locked me in," I said.
