Chapter 7: The Padlock on the Podium

The video of me standing in front of a bulldozer had two million views by Monday.

By Tuesday, Renata had stopped fighting it and started using it.

Tomas brought me the invitation himself, to Beto's gym, hand-delivered on thick cream card.

THE ALDECOA FOUNDATION GALA. SATURDAY. IN HONOR OF OUR DAUGHTER'S RETURN.

"She wants peace," Tomas said. "In public. She'll apologize on stage."

"She will not," I said.

"Then come and make her."

So on Saturday night I walked into the Houston Grand Ballroom in a black dress that Beto's nieces had altered for me and boots I refused to take off.

I carried a small silver clutch.

Inside it was a rusted padlock, cut clean through the shackle, with an Aldecoa Freight tag still wired to the body.

Beto came with me, in a suit that was too tight at the shoulders.

Behind him, at the back of the ballroom, stood five of the fighters in borrowed jackets.

Nobody asked who they were.

The room held four hundred people, and every one of them turned to look at me.

I saw cameras, and board members, and two senators' wives.

I saw a bandstand with a podium under a huge banner that read WELCOME HOME, DALIA in gold letters.

Renata stood beside it in emerald silk, glittering and calm.

She saw me and lifted her glass.

"My daughter," she said into the microphone, and the room applauded.

My skin crawled.

"Five years ago, this family suffered the worst night of our lives," Renata said.
