Chapter 8: Renata Hits Back

Renata kissed my cheek in front of the whole room.

Her lips were cold, and her breath touched my ear.

"You brought a rusty lock to a ballroom," she whispered. "I brought four hundred witnesses who will say you were hysterical."

She stepped back and smiled for the cameras, and I walked down the stairs alone.

Nobody stopped me.

Beto and the five fighters fell in around me at the door.

Outside, the reporter in the plain coat was waiting under the awning with her phone still recording.

"I'm not a regular," she said, and handed me a card. "I've been working on your family for two years."

I looked at the card.

It had a newspaper's name on it, and I knew the name.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because a trucker's widow told me Aldecoa Freight paid her husband to look away from a container," she said. "I never found the container. Maybe you can."

She slid into a car, and it pulled away.

I did not sleep that night.

I lay on the couch in Beto's office with the padlock on my chest, listening to the fighters snore through the wall.

By morning, Renata had answered.

Beto woke me by turning on the television.

On the screen, my own face went by, but not from the ballroom.

It was the Cellar, shot from a phone near the cage.
