Chapter 20: The Top Step

They stood on the roofs and in the windows and on the backs of carts, all the way around the square.

There were fishwives and bakers and lamp-house men, and children on their fathers' shoulders.

The hunters stood in a ring around the Mouth itself, with the Golds in front.

Nobody stood on the steps.

The law says the Challenge of the Chair is fought there, and nobody else may set foot on them until one of us has bled.

The stair went down from the top step into the dark, wide enough for four to walk abreast.

Coppens was already standing on the top step in his black coat, with his long sword at his hip.

Near the front I passed Daan, with Joris's hand gripping the back of his collar.

Behind them stood every healer in Aldenbrug in grey, with Griet in the middle in her white sash.
