Chapter 18: The Hearing
The suit went before the council on Friday, and the hall was fuller than before.
The clinic's lawyer stood at a small table with a binder open in front of him.
My father sat behind him, suspended from the table but not from the room.
My mother sat beside my father with her hands folded and her eyes lowered.
She sat with quiet, pious stillness.
"Madam Chair," the lawyer said, "the claim is simple. The respondent's blood line is an asset developed in the clinic's care, under a written agreement signed by the respondent."
He lifted a document in a plastic sleeve.
"Exhibit A," he said. "The Garrick Clinic Donor Agreement. Executed by Ivy Garrick eight years ago, on the first Monday of March."
A clerk carried it to the chair.
The chair read it, turned a page, and read again.
"This is a lifetime assignment," she said. "Of all biological material, current and future, to the clinic."
"Yes, ma'am."
"With the respondent's signature."
"Yes, ma'am."
The chair looked down at me.
"Miss Garrick. Is that your signature?"
The clerk brought it to me.
I read it standing.
Under the last clause was a line of blue ink, a neat, round, careful hand.
Ivy M. Garrick.
I knew the loops of that M. I had been shown how to write it, at the kitchen table, on a school form.
"The date says the first Monday of March, eight years ago," I said. "I was eleven."
"Minors may be assigned by a guardian," the lawyer said smoothly.
