Chapter 7: Don't Make Me Ask Twice

At midnight I limped out my bedroom window and across the yard to my tracking hut.

It sat at the edge of the pines, one room with a stove and a cot and forty years of maps on the walls.

I had been coming here since I was nine to be alone.

Eli was already inside.

He stood by the cold stove with his hands in his jacket pockets and looked at the maps on my wall without reading them.

"You said once this was over," I said.

"I know what I said."

"You said you were waiting for me."

"Sabine." He turned around.

He looked tired and tense, and his boots were wet to the knee from the river.

"You made Beau swear in front of forty people," he said. "I heard every word."

"I know you did."

"You're about to walk into a lie that will break his wolf and end your family's name. I won't be one more person who used you before the thing is done."

"You're not using me."

"I'm the warden on that line. The Council sees everything I do."

"Then let them watch," I said.

"No touching," he said, and his voice cracked on it. "I made terms."

"You broke them already with my ankle."

"That was an emergency."

"And this is an emergency too."

I limped across the floor and stopped in front of him, so close that my chest brushed his jacket.

"You said no touching," I said, "and no asking."

"I did."

"Then you wrapped my foot in a cloth and told me you were waiting for me. You don't get to decide what's allowed, Eli."

"You're hurt."

"I'm furious," I said. "Don't you dare make me ask twice."

He did not answer.

He took his hands out of his pockets and put them on my face.

His palms were rough, and his thumbs stayed on my cheekbones.

"Say it," he said.

"Touch me."
