Chapter 21: Unasked

"Let go of her," Damiano said.

Eamon looked down at the hand on his wrist.

He let go.

I rubbed my arm where his fingers had been, and Damiano did not look at me, because he was watching Eamon's face.

"You touched her on a dock," he said. "You touched her again tonight. I'm out on bail, so I'll say this once and quietly. There won't be a third time."

"I wasn't going to hurt her," Eamon whispered.

"You already did."

The hall doors opened behind us.

Two detectives came in with four uniformed officers, and one of them was the man who had let me through at the precinct.

He had a folder under his arm.

"Eamon Hourigan," he said. "Bernadette Hourigan. We have warrants for both of you. Fraud, grand larceny and conspiracy, among other things."

Eamon didn't fight.

He held out his wrists like a child, and an officer cuffed him.

Bernadette stood at the head table.

She reached for her pearls with both hands and straightened them.

"I'll want my lawyer," she said. "And someone to see to these place cards."

Nobody laughed.

They walked her out through a room that had already forgotten how to be afraid of her.

The detective stopped in front of me before he left.

"Ms. Keane," he said. "The warrant for your arrest was withdrawn at six o'clock tonight. Your name is clear."

I nodded.

I could not say anything, and he seemed to know it.

Luca drove us home with Colleen asleep on his shoulder in the front seat.

I held the folded page in my lap the whole way.
