Chapter 24: Sunday Dinner
The table in the Bay Ridge dining room sat eight, and we put nine at it.
Luca had borrowed a folding chair from the neighbor with the tomatoes.
Colleen sat next to him, which was no accident, and he had stopped pretending it was.
The gray-haired driver came with his wife, who brought a tray of baked ziti and told Damiano that his kitchen was a crime scene.
"Tell me the peas are gone," she said.
"They're gone," Damiano said.
"Check the oven," Luca said.
"Luca."
"I'm only saying the box does say to heat them."
The driver wheezed, and his wife swatted him, and Colleen dropped her fork.
I sat at the end by the window with my father's watch in my pocket.
I had set the lunch pail on the sideboard that afternoon, between the bread and the candles, where I could see it.
It was my first Sunday dinner at a full table since my father died.
I looked at it for a moment before I picked up my glass.
"Can I say something?" I said.
The table went quiet.
"I'm not good at speeches. I used to do payroll."
"We know," Colleen said. "You were very good at it."
"I want to thank you. Not for the trucks, or the court, or the dress." I looked down the table. "A month ago I had no one who would sit with me in a car. Now I can't get out of this house without somebody asking if I've eaten."
