Chapter 14: The Wrong Part
Mitch was already dialing.
His grandfather's phone rang and rang.
Frank kept the handset pressed to his ear, eyes shut.
"Talk to me," he muttered. "Come on. Talk to me."
The tower came back four minutes later.
"Four-One-Charlie is upright. No fire. Six on board, all out. One transported."
Mitch put his hand flat on the wall.
"One transported," he said. "He's eighty-three."
We were in the air to Cleveland in forty minutes, on a Keaton jet out of O'Hare.
Mitch didn't say a word the whole flight.
He held my hand so hard my ring cut into my finger.
Arthur Keaton was in a private room at the Cleveland Clinic with a broken hip and a bruise across his forehead.
He was asleep when we got there.
The hallway outside his room was full of Keatons.
A tall man with Mitch's jaw and gray hair stood at the center of them.
Graham Keaton. Mitch's father. I'd never met him.
He took one look at me and his face went cold.
