Chapter 13: A Size Six Dress

Camille's dinner was roast chicken and a smile that never slipped.

I ate every bite.

I wanted her to see me eat.

"You're so brave," she said, refilling my water. "Most women would be in pieces."

"I'm in pieces," I said, and let my voice wobble.

She patted my hand.

"Wait here. I have something that will cheer you up."

She came back carrying a garment bag.

She unzipped it on the couch.

It was a wedding dress.

White satin, long sleeves, a tiny waist.

"Isn't it gorgeous?" Camille said. "Spencer's mother picked it. For Saturday."

"Saturday."

"You'll fit by then. It's a size six."

I looked at the dress.

I am a size eighteen.

I have been a size eighteen since I was nineteen years old, and I have never once been ashamed of it in my own mirror.

"Six," I said.

"Only a little tight. I found a tea." She was already at the counter, pulling down a tin. "It's all natural. Three cups a day and you'll drop it by the weekend. Everyone at the Langdon house swears by it."

She held out a cup.

It steamed.

It smelled like grass and medicine.

I had a recording on my phone of her saying I'll handle her.

I could have played it right then.

I could have thrown the tea at the wall.

I kept my face soft.

"Camille."

"Yes, honey?"

"I'm not drinking that."

Her smile held.

"It's just tea."

"I'm not drinking it, and I'm not wearing that dress, and I'm not getting smaller for anybody."

Silence.

I watched her decide whether to argue.

"Of course," she said brightly. "Of course. No pressure. We'll talk about it in the morning."

She hung the dress on the bedroom door, where I would see it first when I woke up.
