Chapter 5: The Wall of Pillows

Jasper didn't deny it.

He stood in the study doorway and said, "Your father borrowed a great deal of money from the bank I run."

My stomach dropped.

"How much?"

"Enough that he needs your marriage to a Langdon to pay it back. That's why the engagement was in a hurry."

I stared at him.

"You knew that when you got on the stage."

"Yes."

"And you didn't think to say so."

"I'm saying so now." His voice was steady. "I haven't called a single loan. I won't while you live under my roof. I don't want you to wonder if I married you for leverage."

"Are you?"

"No."

I had heard liars. He did not sound like one.

He also did not sound like a man telling me everything.

"New term," I said. "You don't keep my family from me. Whatever you know about them, I get to know."

"All right," he said slowly. "Not tonight. But I'll give you every fact I can, one at a time, and I won't lie about any of them."

"That's not a promise to tell me."

"It's the one I can keep."

I went back to my room with my arms crossed over my robe.

It was a bad deal, and I took it, because I had nowhere else to go.

At two in the morning there was a loud bang from my bathroom.

I sat straight up.

Water was pouring across the tile and under the door.

A pipe under the sink had split, and the floor was already an inch deep.

I screamed for Jasper.

He came down the hall barefoot in grey sweatpants and nothing else.

He shut off the valve under the sink in one clean motion, and then he turned and looked at me.
