Chapter 21: The Deed
The doctor stood in the gateway with his bag in both hands, looking from the badge to the deputy and back.
"I'm not going anywhere," he said. "I'm a guest."
"You're a witness, Doctor," the woman in the gray blazer said. "For now. Pearl Kessling invited me tonight, and I'd like you to wait by the tent."
He waited by the tent.
The second doctor with the leather bag had already put it down on the grass, and was looking hard at the lake.
On the platform, my mother lifted her chin.
"This is ridiculous," she said, to the crowd. "A girl with a delusion, an aunt with a grudge and a nurse who has taken advantage of her. Gordon, you're not well."
"I'm very well," said my father.
He reached inside his blazer and took out a folded paper.
It was thick and cream-colored, with a blue stamp on the last page.
I knew it before he opened it.
"This is my copy of the deed," he said. "I kept it in the study. I looked at it every night for three weeks."
He held it up so the guests could see.
"My daughter signed this, believing she was sick. Her mother told her so. I let her."
"Gordon," my mother said. "Put that down."
He tore it.
The paper made a long, loud sound in the silence, once down the middle and once across.
He tore it again, and again, until he held a handful of pieces, and he let them fall on the grass at my feet.
"There's a recorded original at the county," said the woman in the gray blazer. "But a deed stamped before the diagnosis, signed by a girl under medication nobody prescribed, is something a judge will want to look at very closely."
