Chapter 22: The Morning After
Devin's POV
They took Irene out through the front door at ten past nine, in her navy dress, between a deputy and the detective.
She had flushed both bottles down the kitchen sink.
The detective had the trap under the sink taken apart on a lawn chair by nine-thirty, and a technician came out from the county at midnight to bag what was left.
Two doctors, one of them in a tux, were driven to the county building to give statements.
Gordon went with them in his own car.
At the end of the drive he stopped, rolled down his window and looked back at Lydia for a long time.
She raised one hand.
He raised his, and drove away.
By eleven the guests had gone, and the lake house was empty except for Pearl asleep in a chair, and Britta washing glasses in the kitchen in a yellow cardigan, because she did not know what else to do with her hands.
I took Lydia back to my place.
She did not argue.
She sat on the edge of my bed with her shoes still on, looking at the wall.
"I keep waiting to feel something," she said.
"It's been four hours."
"No, I mean it. I thought I'd feel like I won." She laughed softly. "I feel like I put down a bag I've been carrying for two years."
"That's allowed."
"What if I wake up and she's right?"
I knelt and took off her shoes.
"She's not."
"She said I'd forget."
"She said it in a doorway with a bottle. She was trying to hurt you." I looked up. "Lydia, somebody handed you a glass of water on that lawn. I didn't see who."
