They Never Loved Me. Now I Don't Remember Them. novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Home
By the first week of April the ice had gone off the lake, and I slept in my grandmother's room.
Devin had carried the old mattress down to the curb himself in February, and bought a new one that was not mine to cry on.
He had also, without being asked, put a hook by the kitchen door for my coat.
Our coats hung on it side by side.
On the first warm Sunday I woke to light on the quilt and the sound of gulls.
He was already awake, lying on his side with his head propped on his hand, watching me.
"You're doing it again," I said.
"Doing what?"
"Counting my breaths."
"I'm admiring them."
I rolled toward him.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"Say it the way you do."
He smiled.
"My name is Devin," he said. "I'm a nurse. You're safe here. I'm in love with you."
"I know," I said. "You can stop saying it every morning."
"I'm not going to."
"Good."
He pulled the quilt down to my waist.
The room was bright, and I could see the sun on his shoulders, and the freckles that crossed them, and a scratch from the boathouse door.
He kissed my collarbone, then lower, and took his time.
I wrapped my legs around his hips and tugged at him.
"You're slow," I said.
"I'm thorough."
"You've been thorough for four months."
"Then I'm very good at it by now."
He slid inside me with one long, deep push, and I gasped at the ceiling.
He stopped, buried to the hilt, and held there with his forehead against mine.
"Look at me," he said.
I did.
His hazel eyes were dark and wide, and his mouth was open, and I saw a man who had given up a job in Denver for a girl who might have forgotten his name.
