Chapter 13: Toy Fair
I looked at my brother on the step.
He hadn't slept. There was a coffee stain on his tie and his hands were white on the box.
"You walked out of Mom's study with that," I said.
"Last night. She was at a foundation dinner."
"She'll notice."
"She doesn't open it. She hasn't opened it in eight years. She just keeps it."
Fletcher came up behind me, pulling his flannel back on, buttons in the wrong holes.
He looked at Drew. Then at the label.
"Take pictures," he said. "Every page. Tonight."
"The box is the proof," Drew said.
"The box is paper. Paper can go missing." Fletcher held the door wider. "Come in. Dad makes terrible coffee, but it's hot."
Drew stood there for a second.
Then he came in.
Gus poured him a mug without asking who he was.
"You're the brother," Gus said.
"Yes, sir."
"You look like a man carrying something heavy."
Drew looked at me.
"I told him," I said.
Gus pushed the sugar across the bench.
"Put it down when you get there, son. Not before. But get there."
Drew drank the whole mug standing up and didn't put the box down once.
