Dane's POV
At two in the morning on Friday the tug sat tied to the grain dock at Terminal 4 with her engines ticking.
I was the only man awake.
The captain was asleep in his bunk below, and the deckhand was asleep in his.
I had the wheelhouse and the river and the lights on the St. Johns Bridge.
I had been on watch for four hours, and I had not thought about the river once.
My phone buzzed on the chart table.
It was a text from a number I had saved as D.H., because I did not trust myself with her name.
Are you alone?
I looked at the screen for a long time.
Yes, I typed.
Lock the door.
I got up and put the bolt across the wheelhouse door, and my hands were not steady on it.
Sit in the captain's chair. Call me.
I did.
She picked up on the first ring.
"Dane," Signe said.
Her voice was low and slow, and I felt it in my knees.
"Doctor," I said.
"Are you sitting?"
"Yes," I said.
"Good. You've been on that boat since Wednesday morning, and you've kept your hands to yourself. I know because I asked Hana, and she'd know."
"I haven't touched myself," I said. "I haven't touched anything."
