Chapter 14: The Freeloader Heir
"I didn't know," Nate said. "Not one of those checks."
"I believe you," Richard said. "I don't think anyone else will."
Nate stood in the dark hall with his back against his old bedroom door.
"What do you want, Richard?"
"What I've always wanted. I'm just going to ask for it properly this time."
His uncle's voice stayed as pleasant as a man reading out a menu.
"Tomorrow my lawyers file in probate court. Undue influence."
"A grandson who wouldn't take his calls, living poor in an attic where an old man could see it."
"And the old man paying and paying."
"Then in August, a new will."
"And I'll ask the board to suspend you until that's settled. I think they'll want to."
"You know I never saw him," Nate said.
"I know you never saw him," Richard said. "That's what made it so clever."
"Read the paper Tuesday, Nate. Goodnight."
On Tuesday at seven Leah was already at the kitchen island with her phone, and she didn't hand it to him.
