Chapter 6: The Brunch

The brunch was at the Ashgrove Foundation's ballroom, and Lydia's stylist had dressed me in green.

It was a good dress, and it didn't fit the way my own jeans did.

I had pinned my mother's silver wren to the collar before I left my room.

It was the only thing I owned that she had worn every day, a little bird with one chip in its tail, and I wasn't going to walk into that room without her.

"You look wonderful," Eliana whispered at the door.

"I look like a lamp."

"A very expensive lamp."

She squeezed my hand, and hers was cold.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"I'm fine. I just have a bad feeling about Torsten and a microphone."

There were two hundred people in the ballroom, and a photographer on every wall.

Finbar was already at the head table in a navy suit, and when I came in he stood.

He took my hand in front of the room, as the terms allowed, and turned it over once.

"Your hands are clean," he said quietly.

"I scrubbed for twenty minutes."

"It's a pity."

"Hands only," I said. "That's in the terms."

"I was commenting on the grease."

I sat down before my face could do anything about that.

Torsten rose after the salad.

He tapped his glass with a spoon, and the room hushed for him.

"Friends," he said. "Some of you have heard the miracle that has come to our family this month. I want to say it plainly, as a trustee and as an uncle."

He turned to me with his hand over his heart.

"Our Hattie has come home. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that after twenty-four years, the Ashgrove daughter finally has her rightful place at this table."
