Chapter 13: Both Daughters Leave
Caroline followed us upstairs and took Audrey's suitcase off the bed.
"You can't both leave tonight," she said.
"We can stay until morning," I answered.
Audrey looked at me before speaking.
"I'd like to go now," she said.
I put my clean socks into my own bag.
"Then now," I agreed.
Victor appeared in the connecting doorway.
His sleeve caught the towel we had used as a door wedge.
He picked it up before stepping through.
"Why is this on the floor?" he asked.
"To keep the door open," I said.
He looked at the door, then put the towel back where it had been.
For once, he hadn't needed a better explanation.
"Somebody must carry that down," he said.
"The more obedient daughter will do it."
"Naturally," Caroline agreed, holding the case out like a trophy.
Audrey and I looked at each other.
"I'm very disobedient," Audrey said, and put both hands behind her back.
"I'm worse," I told Victor.
"I wore hiking boots to a black tie event."
"You wore a tuxedo to a beauty pageant," I added to Audrey.
"That's defiance in the other direction," Audrey said, pleased.
