Chapter 16: No More Prizes
The wrapped object was a framed family tree with my name wrong.
Victor unveiled it at the reception before anybody asked him to.
MAY PALFREY appeared in gold beneath his own flourishing signature.
Audrey's name stood beside mine in smaller letters.
She read both names and looked toward me.
"She uses Harper," she told him.
Victor held the frame higher for the people gathering around us.
"It's a family tree," he explained.
"She's in the family," Audrey answered.
He looked at me over the top of the frame.
I had expected to feel flattered by the effort.
Instead, I was embarrassed for the name he'd tried to replace.
"I'd like my own name on it," I said.
"It can be changed," Caroline replied quickly.
"Then change it," Audrey told her.
A woman from the reception committee stood beside us with a microphone.
She looked at Victor, waiting to know whether this was the presentation.
