Chapter 16: Sisters

On Saturday morning Lindsey came out of my grandmother's spare room wearing my pajamas, with her hair flat on one side.

"Your pillow is evil," she said. "It's lumpy on purpose."

"Nana made it," I said. "She considers lumps a feature."

"Sit," my grandmother said from the stove. "Both of you. Noemi, you too, you've been here since six."

"I came to support the family," Noemi said from the table. She had a notebook open beside her plate. "I also came for the eggs."

Lindsey's mother had texted at seven. Lindsey had shown me the screen without a word.

Stay with Mrs. Duran as long as you need. I'm not the one who gets to say no to you anymore.

My grandmother had read it over her shoulder and said, "Well. That's one true sentence," and gone to make up the bed.

Now she set a plate in front of Lindsey with three eggs, toast and a heap of beans.

"I'm not very hungry," Lindsey said.

"Eat anyway."

"I really can't, I had a..."

"Honey." My mother had come in from the porch, where she'd been on the phone with a lawyer since dawn. She sat down across from Lindsey and pushed the fork toward her. "For seventeen years a man has been telling you to eat breakfast. I'm not him. I'm only asking because the eggs are hot."

Lindsey stared at her.

Then she laughed, a real one, and picked up the fork.

"Okay," she said. "But I'm only doing it because you asked nicely."

"I always ask nicely," my mother said. "It's the problem."

Noemi tapped her pen on the notebook.
