Chapter 6: The Assembly
The gym smelled of floor wax and six hundred students holding still.
A banner hung over the stage that said: BRIGHTWATER FAIRNESS AWARD, in gold letters.
I sat in a folding chair next to my father, in my blazer, with my hands in my lap.
The empty EpiPen was in my inside pocket, and the hospital chart was folded in the other.
My mother sat in the second row. She had put on lipstick.
My grandmother stood against the back wall with her arms crossed, and Noemi was up in the bleachers with a phone in each hand.
Lindsey sat near the front, in the green dress, with her chin up.
The board chair gave a speech about integrity.
A man from the district gave my father a glass trophy shaped like a set of scales.
My father held it up, and the room stood and clapped.
"Thank you," he said into the microphone. "I'm only a steward of this school. What happened last Saturday was the hardest moment of my career. A leader's family isn't exempt from the rules."
More applause.
He turned to me with a warm face.
"My daughter has been through something frightening. She's here today to say a few words. Marisol."
He held out the microphone.
I took it.
The gym went quiet, and the first thing I heard was my own breath.
"Thank you," I said. My voice was still rough. "I want to say what happened on Saturday."
My father's smile stayed where it was.
"I had an allergic reaction at lunch. My lips swelled and I couldn't breathe. A paramedic said I needed the first ambulance, and put a red band on my wrist."
