Chapter 19: Our Adopted Girl

My mother came in at seven, when every guest was seated.

She wore emerald silk and her gold earrings.

She took the long way around the tables so that everyone could see her.

She was smiling when she reached table one.

She saw the card against my water glass, and the smile stayed exactly where it was.

I watched her read the capitals.

"Inés," she said, warmly, for the tables nearest us. "You came."

"I said I would."

"Table nineteen is more comfortable. Near the door, in case you need air."

"This is fine."

Two hundred people were watching the family table.

She could not carry a place card off it without making a scene, and she knew it.

She sat down across from me and put her handbag on her lap.

"Enjoy the evening," she said, very softly. "It's the last you'll have at my expense."

Dinner came.

Nobody ate much.

At each place lay a cream program with the stores' gold crest, and I saw the partners opening them one after another.

They turned to page four.

They found the family tree with the dotted box around my name.

Lying loose on top of it was a second sheet in the same gold type.

A man two tables over lifted the second sheet.

He held it next to the first and looked from one to the other.

The woman beside him whispered something, and the whisper traveled.

My mother didn't see it.

She was watching the stage, where a man in a dark suit tapped a glass with a spoon.

He passed her the microphone.

She stood and the room fell quiet.

"Friends," she said. "Partners. Family."

Her voice was lovely, low and certain, and she let the pause run a moment.
