Chapter 18: The Rematch
The room went quiet.
Kenzie didn't seem to notice.
She pulled a dining chair into the middle of the living room and sat on it with the deck in her lap.
"Come on," she said. "It's tradition. The five of us always play."
Nobody moved.
"Greer?" She smiled at me. "You're not scared of a card game, are you?"
Boone's hand found the small of my back.
He didn't push. He just let me know he was there.
"Sure," I said. "Let's play."
I pulled a chair in across from her.
Tanner came, then Clay. Ford came last and sat on the arm of the couch.
My mother set her plate down on the piano and sat in the armchair by the fire.
Kenzie dealt blank cards and pens to all of us.
"First question," she said. "Mine."
She drew a card she didn't need to read. She'd written it herself.
"Who in this room would walk out on the people who love her without saying a word?"
She looked right at me while she said it.
