Chapter 19: Her Card

The door shut behind her.

Every head in the room turned to Ford.

He hadn't moved from the arm of the couch.

"Ford?" Tanner said. "What's she talking about?"

Ford looked at me.

I put the deck down on the coffee table.

"Not in here," I said.

I got my coat from the hook and went out onto the porch.

After a second, he followed.

The porch light was on. Somebody's wind chime was going two houses down. My breath smoked.

Ford pulled the door shut behind him and stood with his back against it.

"She showed me in the Rockies," he said. "On the second night. She'd taken all the cards home from the party."

"I figured."

"I thought she was lying. I thought she wrote it herself."

"She didn't."

He closed his eyes.

In the second round of the game, I hadn't only been the one asking.

I'd been playing too.

If only four of us could stay together, who would I leave behind?

I wrote my card under the table before anyone else picked up a pen.

Ford.

And then I watched three cards turn over with my name on them, and I left mine face down, and I never flipped it.
