Chapter 22: The Planner
Boone drove me back across town with the hazards on.
I ran up three flights of stairs, and my knee screamed the whole way.
Our door was open.
My roommate was on her knees on the floor, folding scrubs into a duffel bag in perfect squares.
Her bed was stripped. Her side of the closet was empty hangers.
The cooler she'd arrived with in July sat by the door, already packed.
"Hey," she said, without looking up. "I left you the rice cooker."
"Stop folding."
"I'm almost done."
"Stop."
She stopped.
Her hands stayed flat on the scrubs.
"His left side won't work," she said. "Mama called me from the hallway at the hospital. She was whispering so he wouldn't hear her cry."
"I'm so sorry."
"Daddy runs the feed store. Mama does the books, but she doesn't know the suppliers."
"My brothers all have jobs. Somebody has to be there."
"Your brothers."
"They're boys, Greer. They'll stand in the hospital hallway and look sad."
"Somebody has to make the calls and do the meals. I'm the one who does that."
I knew that voice.
I'd used it for eight years.
I sat down on the floor across from her, with the duffel between us.
"Who said you're the one?"
"Nobody had to say it."
