Chapter 17: Higher Than Mine

Roman asked for five minutes, and I gave him ten, which was the most generous number I could find.

The Ironclad 3 junket was held on a hotel rooftop in Beverly Hills, in a heat that made the swimming pool shimmer.

Forty reporters waited in the lobby, and a line of publicists looked at me and then at their phones.

My brother's trailer was parked in the hotel's service lot.

He was alone inside, in a black tank top, eating dry cereal from the box.

"Ads," he said. "You came."

"You said it was important."

"Sit."

I stayed standing.

Through the little window I could see the two billboards on Sunset, one above the other.

The top one said SALT YEAR in white letters on a gray lakebed, with my name in the corner.

The bottom one was his, forty feet of Roman in a steel mask.

"Yours is higher," Roman said, following my eyes.

"They're the same size."

"Mine's lower."

"Yours is lower," I agreed.

He laughed, then stopped, because there was no one to laugh with.

He put the cereal down and rubbed his face with both hands.

"I don't know how to do this," he said. "I've practiced in the car."
