Chapter 19: The Wrist
Beck's POV
The water was colder than I remembered.
It closed over my head, black and green, and for one second my body knew exactly where it was and what came next.
Then I kicked up through it and broke the surface, and the rope tugged at my belt.
I had tied the end of it round my waist before the first gust.
That was the one thing I'd done differently.
Waves came at me from the left in long heavy walls.
I rode the first, and the second, and spat salt, and searched.
Ahead of me the tender lay on its side, white and slick.
Around it I could see heads: a man shouting, a man clinging to the keel, a man swimming hard across the swell.
A blond head, small, screaming.
Coralie had a lifejacket.
She was pulling it on over her head as she kicked.
