Chapter 13: A Return by the Front Door
Seravelle came home through three doors, and every one of them had been expecting her.
The first was the garden postern behind the pear trees.
She had used it since she was nine.
She knocked the old signal, two short and one long.
A gardener opened it at once, pushing a barrow of mulch.
"Her Majesty had the hinges oiled this morning," he said.
"She thought you might want to come in quietly."
Seravelle looked at the shining hinges and felt robbed.
"It is meant to squeak," she told him.
"The squeak is half of an escape."
The gardener wheeled his mulch away from her.
"She will find a worse one," Ilysanne said.
Seravelle led them along the wall to the servants' entrance instead.
The palace cook stood in the kitchen doorway with a bowl of peas.
She set it on Seravelle's lap before anybody had finished saying hello.
"They were due at noon," the cook said.
"Your mother said you would pass through around four."
Seravelle sat down on a flour barrel and looked at the peas.
