Chapter 14: The Dinner Invitation

The first course of the family dinner was a trout set in gooseberry jelly, and it was looking at her.

Seravelle had been served this fish at every reconciliation since she was six.

It was called the Welcome Fish.

Nobody in the Orvenna family had ever eaten more than the tail.

Queen Velorinne sat at the head of the small dining table, with a daughter on either hand.

There was no seat for Prince Othriel.

His chair had been carried out that morning, and the tablecloth had not been told.

At each place lay a small card in the steward's best handwriting.

Seravelle turned hers over.

It promised that she was sorry she left and would never do it again.

Ilysanne's card said she forgave her and hoped they might begin afresh.

The queen's card was longer, and she read it with her lips pressed together.

"Who wrote these?" she asked the footman.

"The steward, Majesty," the man said.

"He wished for a smooth reconciliation."

"He has put a promise in my daughter's mouth," said Velorinne.
