Chapter 17: An Heir by Choice
Ilysanne read her letter standing, with the paper held flat so it would not shake.
The court had heard her read a hundred proclamations in that voice.
This time she read it as a person.
"I, Ilysanne Orvenna, ask to step away from the succession," she said.
"I ask it freely."
"Nobody has pressed me, and nobody has bought me off."
A clerk wrote it down with his tongue between his teeth.
"I also ask for one year abroad," she said.
"I have been tired for so long that I was calling it manners."
Somebody in the gallery laughed, then stopped.
Queen Velorinne listened to the end, and she did not move while Ilysanne folded the page.
"Your request is heard," the queen said.
"I accept it."
"You are released from the succession with my thanks, and you may go abroad when you choose."
Ilysanne bowed her head.
Her shoulders came down by an inch, and her eyes were wet.
Seravelle had seen her sister cry only twice, and both times it had been over a horse.
"I will remain on the throne," said Velorinne, to the whole room.
