Chapter 4: The Incorrect Disguise

The brownest dress in the shop had belonged to three brides.

Seravelle learned this after she had paid for it.

The shopkeeper tied the apron strings behind her waist.

"A lucky choice," the woman said.

"Every marriage lasted."

Caedrin studied the dress from beside the door.

"Did all three women know they were being married?" he asked.

The shopkeeper paused with her fingers on the knot.

Seravelle stepped down from the fitting stool without his assistance.

"I am buying it for concealment," she explained.

The woman looked at the knight's immaculate uniform.

"Then he should try the curtains," she said.

Caedrin glanced at the heavy brown fabric over the window.

"I require something with a longer sleeve," he replied.

Seravelle pressed her lips together and counted her remaining coins.

Her new dress had cost less than the velvet case of her dagger, the one that only opened letters.

She could live very well without looking like a princess.

The shopkeeper reached into a cupboard and produced a veil.

"Included," she told Seravelle, laying it over her copper hair.

Seravelle lifted the lace away from her eyes.

"I do not require that part," she said.

"Every bride says that before she sees the wind," the woman replied.

Caedrin stepped forward, holding Seravelle's folded green riding dress.
