Chapter 8: You Said My Name

Gwen's POV

I found Cadoc at supper the next day and waited until he had a full plate and an audience.

He sat at the head of the fourth-year bench with his boots on a chair and a laugh going.

I stopped at the end of the table with my tray.

"Captain," I said, in my low Gwyn voice.

"Treharne," he said, pleased. "Sit."

"You said my name where a wall could hear."

The table went quiet.

It was the very edge of the rule, and I enjoyed it.

"I did," Cadoc said.

"I told you what that would cost."

"You did," he said.

"The east passage. Midnight. Bring nothing."

I walked away with my tray and sat down at the end of the third-year bench, two places from Iolo Merrick.

Behind me I heard a long silence, and then somebody whooping, and Cadoc's voice saying, "She's challenging me to a fight. It's a very old custom."

I did not turn around.

Beside me Iolo went on eating his bread.

He did not look at me.

But his ears had gone red.

The east passage ran behind the dormitory wall, a cold stone throat nobody used.

I was there at midnight, and so was Cadoc, with his hands in his pockets and a very bad poker face.

"Well?" he said.

"You said my name where a wall could hear," I said.

"I did."

"I told you the terms. You mocked them. You said I'd beg."

He grinned.

"Are you going to beg?" he said.

"No."

I put my hand flat on his chest and pushed him up against the wall.

"You are," I said.

He stopped grinning.

I knelt.

I had never done it, but I had thought about it on four consecutive nights, and I knew what I wanted.

I opened his trousers with both hands.
